My name is Tsukasa Richard Nakai. I am 33-years-old and I am an avid Star Wars fan! My favorite character is Darth Vader. I’m currently involved in the Best Buddies Friendship Program, Ambassador Program, and the Jobs Program.

I’ve been part of the Best Buddies chapter at UCLA since February 2017 and I am currently their Buddy Director. I’ve been an ambassador since March 2017, and through the Jobs Program, I now work as a part-time employee in the Best Buddies California State Office as an administrative assistant… I love it!

My life before joining Best Buddies was one of self-loathing. In October 2000, I had been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. I had never fully accepted who I was as a person and I was always very self-critical. Despite my achievements, including becoming a published author and a college graduate, I would never praise myself or give myself a kind word. The one person who helped me on my journey of self-acceptance was one of my colleagues, Tori Braden. When she was Chapter President at UCLA, she asked me if I wanted to become an Ambassador.  I replied, YES! — thinking that I wouldn’t get asked to do too much, but I was mistaken!

One month after I participated in the Ambassador Training at UCLA, the Program Supervisor of our area called me and asked me if I wanted to do a speaking engagement for one of our sponsors at the Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle! It wasn’t until I started interning at Best Buddies state office in California, that I found out Tori had advocated on my behalf. This was unusual; we barely knew each other, but she took a huge risk on me and it paid off for both of us.

+ QUESTIONS:

5. What is Richard Nakai's favorite program?

A. Best Buddies Friendship Program                       B. Star Wars

C. Ambassador Program                                          D. Jobs Program

Canada would remind Norman Bethune, a great Canadian physician doctor, who devoted himself to China during World War II. And now, besides Dr. Bethune, whenever mention of this country with beautiful maples, my Canadian pen pal will come to my mind. I met him in an English-learning forum. I often posted a lot of questions there, and he always voluntarily helped me out. And gradually, we got familiar and became friends. For a while, I was rather depressed. He always encouraged me to cheer up. Now, I still remember well I got an e-card from him. I lighted up after watching that. He often said, “Keep smiling” at the end of his letter to me. He was very tolerant, and I hardly saw he crossed swords against any other forum members there but one time. A woman put up a post, saying, “She would not agree her daughter to marry a black man.” He responded with Martin Luther King’s quote “We must judge people by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin!”. This comment of his branded on my mind then at once. Oh, the cool friend of Canada!

Protecting yourself and others from the spread of COVID 19

You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID 19 by taking some simple precautions:

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol- based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Why? Washing your hands with soap and water  or using alcohol- based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and others. Why? When someone coughs. sneezes, or speaks they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person has the disease.

Avoid going to crowded places. Why? When people come together in crowds, you are more likely to come into close contact with someone that has COVID-19 and it is more difficult to maintain physical distance of 1 metre (3 feet)

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose, mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and infect you.

You should wear a mask, and know how to dispose of it properly

17. You should clean your hands with an alcohol- based hand rub and then with soap and water.

18. You can maintain 4-feet distance between yourself and others.

19. Never touch eyes, nose and mouth because the virus can enter your body and infect you.

20. Wearing a mask is effective enough to protect you from the virus.

21. The main idea of this passage:

       A. Wearing a mask is compulsory.

       B. Taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

       C. It’s difficult to maintain physical distance of 1 metre.

       D. Wearing and disposing of a mask properly keep us healthy.

22. “dispose of it properly” means:

       A. wear a mask in a good way.

       B. throw it as quickly as possible.

       C. wash and reuse it many times

       D. wash hands immediately after putting a mask into the dustbin
